Show 26 Chua ran after her along the canyon rim. He could see her tiny outline in the distance circling. She had found the path down the canyon. She circled again as if marking the path, and then returned to Chua's shoulder. "Good, Chosovi," Chua said stroking her head and back. Chua was suddenly aware of the grayness of dawn coming into the sky. He had been gone all night. His mother would worry. If he did not return now, it would be too hot to cross the mesa in the heat of the day. Chua made a mental note of the path down the canyon. It looked easy enough for his mother to climb down. Was there a path to the village? Yes, he spotted it. The bottom of the canyon leveled out with bushes growing along the rocky bottom. There was a gentle slope from the canyon floor up to the village. "We'll return here," he said to the bird. He turned and padded toward the southern horizon. He would race against Father Sun. CHAPTER 7 "I've worried about you," Apa said. "What did you find?" "An abandoned village," Chua said. "It's to the north, so Ahote will take us that way anyway." He looked at Ahote still crumpled in the back of the cave sleeping. He had not moved since Chua left. "Sit and tell me about it while you start a fire for me." |
