He could see a break in the earth ahead. Chua closed the distance between him and the dark shadowy crease in the earth where there was a canyon with steep walls and no way down. On the other side was a deep arching overhang. Chua reached the rim and walked along it, looking for a way down. Across the canyon he could see the ruins of an abandoned village under the overhang, sheltered beneath the outcropping rock. He could see no sign of life there. The boy had gone around a hill to the east, so this wasn't his home. How would he get down the sheer canyon cliff? Chua jogged further along the rim, but found no break in the rock. "Find me a path, Chosovi," Chua said. He took the bird on his finger and lifted her into the air. In a flutter of wings she was gone from sight. Chua sat down to rest. He had come a long way with no food in his belly. It was telling him so right now. If he could get across the canyon to the village, he might find an abandoned storage room with something to eat. Chosovi soared passed him, heading down the canyon the other way. The gods were right when they said the blue feathers were powerful. Chosovi was a blessing from Sotuknang. Soon Chosovi was back, fluttering for him to follow her. |
