His eyes squinted into the rising sun. "The Great Painted Canyons are towards the setting sun." His finger reached automatically into the leather pouch and pulled out a root to chew. "I think better when I'm chewing," ( he said. A Ahote's body twitched. He shuffled his feet again. "Why should I listen to you? You're just a boy." Chua shrugged. "Take your mother to the dwelling. Maybe I'll go for chewing root and maybe I won't." He kicked at Chua's shin, but Chua jumped out of the way. Ahote strode off across the sand away from the rising sun. CHAPTER 9 Was Ahote going to the Great Painted Canyons? Chua didn't know. He turned to his mother. I "Water," she said. Chua helped her sit up. He took the jar and poured water into her cupped hands. She drank. "Where's Ahote going?" "I hope he's going to get more chewing root," Chua said. "He wouldn't tell me for sure." |
