Ahote frowned at Apa and got to his feet. <<T-- Chua moved to the entrance of the cave to get away. Ahote picked up another rock and threw it at Chua. Chua jumped out of the way, but he was not quick enough. The rock hit his shoulder. He grunted with pain and climbed out into the sunshine. Chosovi fluttered after hinl Chua grabbed his shoulder with his hand. The sting of the rock pulsed through his entire body. Chua wanted to run, but he must stay to protect his mother. He could not let his mother be hurt. Not now. Not with the baby. Ahote was not in his right mind. No telling what he would do. "And take that silly bird with you," yelled Ahote. "Hopi men do not throw rocks at their children," Apa said. Her voice filled the cave this time. "Leave him alone. He has done nothing to you." "Hopi children mind their elders," Ahote yelled. He picked up another stone and threw it at Chua. It shot out of the cave and landed on the rocks below with a thud. "He has not disrespected you," Apa said. Her voice echoed off the cave walls. "Here, eat," she said, handing Ahote a com cake. "I'm not hungry," Ahote said through gritted teeth. "Now leave me alone." His hands felt his waist. "Where is my pouch of chewing root?" "It's right there," Apa said, pointing to it. "I don't need you telling me where it is," Ahote said. "Then why did you ask?" Apa said. Their voices filled the cave again and again. |
