Show tion of an office and laboratory building to be used during the construction period. The principal features include the Rifle Gap Dam on Rifle Creek, which will store water for release into Davie ditch and to Rifle Creek for diversion to the Grass Valley Canal. Water will also be pumped from the Colorado River near Silt at the Silt pumping plant to serve project lands. Smith Fork Participating Project, Colorado Minor construction work and final testing of the Smith Fork feeder canal and diversion dam, Crawford Dam and Reservoir, and the Aspen Canal were completed during the year. The project works consisting of the Crawford Dam and Reservoir, Smith Fork diversion dam, Smith Fork feeder canal, Aspen Canal and an operating headquarters were transferred to the Crawford Water Conservancy District for operation on January 1, 1964. Advance Planning Activities The major portion of this work consists of the collection of final design data, the preparation of final designs and specifications and completion of definite plan reports. It also includes negotiations with local interests leading to execution of repayment contracts. The definite plan report on the Bonneville unit of the central Utah project is nearing completion and work progressed on reports on the Upalco and Jensen units, which are scheduled for completion in fiscal years 1965 and 1967, respectively. Quality of water studies were continued in the Upper Colorado River Basin as authorized by law. Fish and Wildlife Development In cooperation with the Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming Fish and Game Departments, the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife stocked 6 million rainbow trout and 2 million largemouth bass fingerlings in Lake Powell, Flaming Gorge, and Navajo Reservoirs to meet jointly established fishery management objectives. Due to its remote location and extensive surface area, the stocking operation at Lake Powell relied heavily on air transport for delivery and release of the 5.8 million fish assigned to the lake. Purchase of the North Trout Farm and the Chipeta rearing unit from the Colorado Department of Game, Fish, and Parks has given the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife the combination of 123 |
