Show force, then he is starting the search in a dead area. He has already passed the victim buried at the lower edge of the avalanche, because the wind has carried the scent down towards the valley, and the dog could not detect the scent at thi6 spot. Therefore, under all circumstances, but depending on the direction and force of the wind, the search has to start 5 to 10 meters outside or below the borders of the avalanche. The stronger the wind, the greater should be the distance between the starting point and the edge of the avalanche II! This same procedure should also be followed where a number of jsearch areas are involved. The avalanche dog leader in the upper search area will have to shift his lower search border downwards by 5 to 10 meters* All search fields, including those of the probing crews, must not only be delimited; they must also overlap in order to avoid the possibility of any area remaining unsearched. General directions: 1* Bitches in heat must never be employed on missions. 2* The dog's energy should be conserved during his approach to the avalanche. If he is tired, he should have adequate rest before the search* 3. It is basic that the best and fastest dog be employed in the search, without regard to sex or any mania for success ( which dog should or should not be permitted to attain a success). In case of equally apt dogs, the male dog is employed first. Search discipline! 4. The search for a person buried by avalanche is hunting work and, as a matter of principle, is carried out without a leash. 5* Several dogs must be used simultaneously in a search only if the search fields are far enough apart so that the dogs do not distract and hinder each other. Otherwise, spare dogs should be used as steady replacements. The dog crew as such is not replaced; it remains at the avalanche until its task has been fulfilled or until the search is broken off. - 65- |
