Show Fractures, sprains, contusions: The fractured leg should be set in a splint and the dog should be taken to the veterinarian at once. The same is recommended in case of sprains. In case of contusions, alcohol or aluminum acetate compresses may be used. If in doubt, consult a veterinarian. Rabies: The dog changes in behavior, becomes restless, fidgety, bites without reason ( even his master), creeps into a corner, refuses to eat his favorite food, eats his own excrement, has copious flow of saliva. Note: Rabies occurs only rarely in our regions. Dogs suspected of rabies and suspected as sources of contagion should be isolated at once and a veterinarian should be notified. Worms: tapeworms ( sections) visible in the feces, nematodes, hookworms ( bleeding of the intestines, trichina spiralis). Note: The feces should be checked frequently. In case worms are suspected, laboratory examination of the feces is indicated. The feces should be taken for examination three times on different days, since the possibility exists that no worms will be found in one of the samples* A worm cure should be started only after it has been definitely established that the dog has worms. The worm cure should be carried out according to the directions of the veterinarian. Most types of worms cannot be transferred to humans. False pregnancies: Even though this is not a disease, but rather an overfunctioning of the hormones, it should be mentioned here. Bitches who have not been mated for a prolonged period of time imagine that they are carrying pups. They act just like pregnant bitches; their udders swell and even contain milk* This phenomenon disappears the same way that it came. - 13 - |
