Show Praise. If the dog has made a find, he should receive much praise and should be offered delicacies and comforts. The leader must show his dog his entire happiness. Take, if I may be permitted this analogy, the reaction of shipwrecked individuals when they first see land. A frenzy of happiness! Everybody embraces everybody else and pats him on the shoulder. This is the exact way in which the master shows the dog his pleasure. The dog is affected by this attitude and most likely he will begin to jump up at his master and try to play with him. In case of an unsuccessful search, an object should be quickly buried before the search is stopped so that the dog may register a seeming success He must never be removed from the search without a success, as this would depress any sensitive dog. Further pointing to an object. If the dog has detected a buried person who has then been dug out and removed, the dog will try to return to the spot where the victim was found. The dog leader must not watch this idly. Without knowing why, the dog does the right thing. It is very probable that a second buried person lies close by or underseath. If this is the case, the dog will start to dig again. The dog leader must not be influenced by the false assumption that the dog is digging for the same find as detected previously and thus remove the dog from the spot. If another victim is not in the vicinity, the scent will disappear from this location upon further digging. The dog quickly realizes this and stops the search by himself. The fact that the dog continues to dig can be takon as a definite sign that another victim or a piece of equipment is located in the immediate vicinity. In that case, the search must not be stopped under any circumstances. Forcing the dog to search. It has been repeatedly pointed out already that the dog must not be forced to search. It is again stated here that a dog unwilling to work for any reason whatsoever should not be reproached and certainly should not be beaten. If this were done, in the future the dog would walk around nervously in the constant expectation of further blows without actually doing any searching. - 70 - |
