Show 5* Search endurance. In most cases the search represents a hard test of endurance. The first commandmant is not to capitulate too soon if success does not materialize, if the search plan proves to be wrong, or if obstacle piles upon obstacle. Search endurance and tenacity of effort in spite of all obstacles must prevail, even if discouragement sets in. All possibilities have to be fully explored. Perseverance in search work often leads to the goal* 6. Direction of the mission. Supervision is assumed by the most experienced member of the probing crew and the dog mission crew. Sinoe the search plan has to be oriented according to the dogs, the avalanche dog leader serves as first adviser of the mission leader during the preparation of the plans. Thereafter, the avalanche dog leader carries out his own duty, while the mission leader directs the entire operation. The mission leader is the " army commander" during the battle. He is primarily in charge of the tactical formulation and implementation of the search plan. Therefore, he has to keep the entire search operation in mind and must not lose himself in incidental details ( probing), as in that way he might lose the perspective for the entire operation. ( In case of fire, the commander of the fire department will not operate the fire hose, but will direct the entire operation.) Even though the mission leader directs the entire operation and assumes the entire responsibility, he must not issue orders autocratically. On the contrary, he should discuss conditions with other experts, accept their observations and suggestions and study them. On the basis of the total knowledge pooled, he is able to formulate his search plan and to make the necessary arrangements* These arrangements must then be carried out. This mission director also reports to the rescue and safety services and takes care of the supply of provisions and other requirements of the search crew* Avalanche classification, search tactics.
