Show Reaction of the dog: The uog rushes to the hole again and expects to find his master there, as previously. However, he discovers that this time there is only snow* Either he thrusts his nose at once toward the source of the scent and begins to scratch for his master, or he stands there perplexed. In this case, help must be given at once. The trainer rushes after the dog with inciting calls. He now shows the animal what to do to reach his master. He points clearly to the spot under which his master lies, while he calls out impressively: " Dog's name Search!", and begins to scratch vigorously at the spot with his hands. The dog will comprehend this at once and will begin to join in the scratching. The buried dog leader facilitates detection by groaning under the snow cover or by attracting the dog* After detection, again vigorous praise and a delicacy. The leader puts the dog again on a leash, hurries back along the edge of the avalanche to the starting point and again delivers the dog to the trainer. During this time the helper shovels the hole free again and prepares it for the next exercise. Phase III. The dog leader hurries away from the dog in the direction of the hole, as described above. A second helper buries the dog leader and the first helper in such a way that the helper lies in front of the dog leader. Again, the snow cover is no more than 20 centimeters thick. Then, the second helper hurries back along the edge of the avalanche to the starting point and lets the dog smell him briefly. Hereafter, the third phase progresses like the second. - 29 - |
