Show Cheese. Generally speaking, cheese is never used as food. It is difficult to digest. However, contrary to a generally accepted opinion, it does not damage the dog's sense of smell, except when he is fed cheese just prior to working with his nose. Thus, it is perfectly all right to offer the dog a piece of cheese rind or a piece of cheese itself once in a while. Eating of grass. If he has a vitamin deficiency, the dog will eat grass and other greens indiscriminately. If required, he will look for grass containing silicic acid. After eating some, he will vomit and thus free himself of indigestion; i. e., grass is the emetic for the dog. Calcium deficiency. If a dog starts to lick walls, he lacks the required calcium. Every drug store sells calcium tablets, which are given to the dog once or twice a week. Tablets, medicine. If it is necessary to give the dog tablets or medicine drops, they should be placed or poured into the interior of the throat on the base of the tongue. This forces the dog to swallow the medicine. Tablets may also be wrapped in bites of meat and given to the dog in this way. Feeding in case of diarrhea. If the dog has diarrhea, one tablespoon full of animal charcoal is mixed into the feed, or the dog may be given animal charcoal tablets. A thick soup of roasted flour is a good household remedy. In this instance, the dog should not be fed milk or water at all. In case of diarrhea, bones must never be fed under the erroneous assumption that bone matrix hardens up the stool. Feeding prior to the performance of work. The dog 6hould not be fed prior to performing work. Just as is the case with humans, a full stomach makes the dog lazy. The dog becomes unwilling to work. The method of feeding. The food for the dog chould never be placed on the ground. A so- called feed bench should be used. This raises the food to the height of the dog's breast so that he can eat without effort* - 10 - |
