Show 2. SYSTEMATIC AVALANCHE DUTY Availability. The avalanche dog leader has to notify the mountain rescue safety service of his whereabouts. They need his home address and his business address ( telephone) for immediate contact. If he moves or changes his address, he has to report that fact* Furthermore, every change in his availability for missions ( sickness of leader or dog, heat in a bitch, vacation, work or other reasons for unavailability) has to be reported. Once he is available for missions again, that fact also has to be reported. Mission equipment. The mission equipment has to be handy and must be kept in good condition* It is of advantage to have a knapsack already packed. This should also contain a minimum ration for both leader and dog ( camp blanket). Probe, shovel ( spade), first- aid kit, avalanche cord, illumination, marking flags, are required as mission equipment* Skis and climbers are taken along on every avalanche assignment. Notification, of accident. When the avalanche dog leader receives notification of an accident, he must assume that the notification is at best inaccurate, if not completely wrong or distorted. Therefore, he does not rush off to the indicated accident area. Instead, he goes first to the place where the notification originated ( shelter shed, BRD- outlying station, police or border command post). There, he will'inquire into the details and exact conditions of the avalanche and the accident. Notice of departure. Before he leaves, the avalanche dog leader sends notification of his departure for the mission to the dispatcher of the avalanche dog squadron, or at least to the office of the Austrian Mountain Rescue Service, Tirol, Innsbruck. This notice of departure is most important so that the office staff is informed of the mission and can alert other forces for further avalanche missions. Findings and facts. A question well asked i6 half the answer! The avalanche dog leader therefore tries to obtain all the information he can about " his" avalanche on his way to the scene. - 52 - |
