Show In view of these 3 apparent facts, the rescue crews get somewhat discouraged. This is fully justified because the possibilities of success are slight indeed. The only advantage of this type of avalanche is the short route the crew has to travel. Furthermore, as compared with skiing avalanches, the mission area is usually located in an area somewhat protected from the weather. Live rescues are rather unlikely, since the victims are buried and crushed with incredible force. Handl Handling of the mission. Fundamentally, one has to decide very soon whether to continue or to abandon the search. The decision to abandon rescue attempts must be justified by an absolute lack of hope in view of the extent, depth and condition of the avalanche, change of weather, etc. Search rules: a) Hasty search of the cone ( rough search). b) If the hardness of the snow permits, begin normal probing and search work in the urgent search areas. c) If probing is impossible because of the hardness of the snow, begin trench construction from the bottom toward the top at probing intervals. The trenches should be searched from time to time by dogs and should be Stabbed through with probes. - 50 - |
