Show Important would be the presence of a physician who could expertly treat the victim immediately following his rescue or even treat him during the rescue process. A tent, heating facilities and cooking utensils are of special value also for the rescue crews during storms and cold weather* If a tent is not available, a protected snow bivouac can be built. A modern avalanche mission is unthinkable without portable radio communication.. 3* Time. Time is of particular importance in avalanche missions. However, it oust be used rationally. This means that upon arrival at the mission location, one does not rush into a senseless search; the rescue crews and the dogs often require a rest before they are fit to search. 4. Search discipline* All search crews, including the avalanche dog leader, have to subject themselves to a severe search discipline. This means that they have to search their assigned search areas conscientiously* They must not exchange their assigned search areas arbitrarily for others believed to be more promising, in order to secure a find for themselves. Selfishness, jealousies, the need to be of importance, a narrow concern about who finds the victim, these are not allowed. They always endanger the search plan and thereby the success of the mission. The buried person does not care about the personality of his rescuer. But he does care about being located quickly!!! Part of the search discipline, also, is the aligned probing line commanded by a line leader. Exact probing requires precise work* densely laid out and exactly aligned. The probes have to be inserted vertically and with sensitivity* Probing should be even and the advances should also be uniform. The line leader has full responsibility for this. A smoking pause every hour at most. The probes remain aligned in the snow during these pauses. The pauses are extremely important, so the men do not become dull. In such a case, the precise search would degenerate into a " disorderly" one. Proper performance for a probing crew has to be practiced at the locations during the early part of winter. - 4 7 - |
