Show of location is located. If the search has a negative result, that is, the point of location is found in an unlikely area not considered at first, then no blame can be placed on the rescue worker. Elementary chance, over which man has no influence, is more than we can cope with. Even though the secondary search area is considered secondary, it must under no circumstances be disregarded as insignificant. Even though it is less likely, the point of location may still be there, as has been repeatedly shown. It has been previously pointed out that the point of location is fixed by the following conditions: a) by the shape of the terrain - and vegetation b) by the type of avalanche c) by the burial situation d) by the flow of the avalanche Now the type of influence, a function of these elements, will be shown: Type of terrain: a) steep slope Either the avalanche carries the buried person along to its tip over the steep slope; or it deposits him with a part of its mass down the steep slope, and the main part of the avalanche passes over him. There now exist 2 possibilities for depositing the victim: 1. In the avalanche cone, 2. Below every steep break ( in grade). In this case, the first urgent search area is the avalanche cone, especially if that i6 where the main deposit of the avalanche is located. Further possibilities to be considered are below every steep slope. b) Levelling off ( transition zone). If an avalanche has to pass over an area where the terrain levels off, *^^ v steep" slopes its flow is braked correspondingly. This is the way in which every deposit Point of location occurs. The greater and the more nearly point of horizontal the levelling off, the greater location and more effective is the brajcing and damming action; and so location it is much more likely that the buried person is deposited here, at the - 37 - StiiUbRII. |
