Show Important: To get and maintain the avalanche dog in top condition, it is absolutely necessary that the dog is taken along on 6ki trips. However, we warn again against overexerting the dog on these ski trips. Stray avalanche dogs. If the avalanche dog gets the necessary running exercise, as described above, he is not tempted to roam by himself. He can be educated to go only with his master and this becomes a habit- he likes well. By the same token, insufficient supervision helps form the habit of unauthorized roaming. There is no such thing as an avalanche dog who roams around by himself! The avalanche dog is thus not permitted to grow up independently and to rely upon himself and then be suddenly subjected to " training exercises". The dog trainer has to occupy himself from the first with the young dog, I would almost like to say " day and night", by playing and exercising with him. Thus, they become extremely close companions and react properly to each other. The trainer should take every opportunity to play with the dog; however, he should interrupt the game at any time and demand some act of obedience from the dog. 3. THE FEEDING OF THE DOG General. The dog is a meat eater by nature. His inner organs ( stomach, intestines) are adapted to a meat diet. Even in the company of humans, the dog has remained a meat eater; however, he does not refuse other nourishment. Note; a) Keeping the above in mind, the feeding should consist mainly of meat. b) Bones do not represent a meal. They should be considered as something additional. c) Biscuits, dog biscuits, sugar, chocolate, are given only as delicacies. d) The feeding bowl has to be kept in a clean condition at all times. - 7 - |
