Show in the church than his predecessors but the rest of the power structure was whoever was the manager of Kennecott. Whoever was the vice president in Salt Lake for the Union Pacific Railroad. Whoever was the vice president in Salt Lake for U. s. Steel. People like that. There was an industrial and business power structure and the church was only at the periphery because of Z.C.M.I. and Zion's Bank was not as big as it was. There was much more of a balance between Gentiles and Gentiles included the copper company, the railroad company, some of the financial structure. And that it seems to me changed down through the years in that copper lost its clout as it were. You know, the mining business went downhill. Railroad business went downhill. There's been very little replacement for that. The church's real estate holdings, bank holdings, etc. are, I think, much more secure, much firmer. The church plays a larger role in government than it did in those days and I really think, it's not always for the worst, but I think the balance that existed then is kind of gone. In part that has to do with the slump, say downtown. Jewish merchants played some role then in the Chamber of Commerce. I don't know how much they play now. There isn't much. There were no major--Auerbach's is gone. The Paris which, you know, Jules Stryphus is Jewish. He may not be very active or active at all. The Auerbach were never active at all. But they were considered Jewish businesses with the Franks, etc. and a lot of other things. 48 |
