Show anti-war movement. We were actively participating in meetings, national student league convention. For instance, in Washington, it must have been around 1933. '34, '33 with resolutions we would not support the government for the United States in any war it may conduct. Those '~ere the peace, the student peace rnov:ernents. Now right about that ti~e, maybe ~y second year in college, something about the administration in college got me angry. I don't remember what it was. So I whipped off a very bitter letter to the college newspaper. This is dot, mtown Nett~ York University at t·7ashington Square. It was three newspapers. The Washington Square Bulletin. The Sc~ool of Cornnerce had a newspaper and the Education Sun, which was the ~ewspaper fer the School of Education. And I sent my letter to the Educati-on Sun. I don't knoT_.., what it was quite that got ~e annoyed but anyway the paper used thb letter and I ran into the editor one day and he says, "If you feel that severely about it, '.'lhy don't you come on the staff of the paper." So I joined the staff of the paper and that was sor..eho'tl the beginning of the end of art fer awhile and the beginning of a career. The college newspaper was a nice bunch of twenty, maybe, guys and gals who had one purpose. To get out a newspaper. So you learned hotv to gather ca!:lpus news. How to take it to the printer once a week. Y-ou watched type being set. You wrote headlines. You got involved in distribution of tt.e paper and ~y the end of 13 |
