He recalls working for the New York Post and the New York City Radio Station during World War II, and coming to Salt Lake City, Utah, to work for KALL Radio after the war. He talks about politics in Utah, the civil rights and socialist movements, and his move from newspaper and radio to television. 71 pages. |

Show that last time we all saw Roosevelt. You see, there'd been photos. He's in a limousine in the rain. It was a rainy day looking very, very bad. He smiled, he waive but his face was thin. He had pallor. This was after his re-turn from Yalta as I recall. And I remember quite a few of us news people commenting on how bad he looks. He shouldn't be out in the rain. That sort of thing. And a week or so later he was gone. And again you remember things like, you know, everybody says you remember certain things when the war began, when Roosevelt died. You do. When the war began I was listening to a philharmonic concert. I was married by then. Was horne and here came on this announce-rnent. No, no, I'm mixing it up. That was Roosevelt's death. WAs announced during the philharmonic concert. When the war beg~n I was at the station,teletype machines banged it out. That's about it. I remember when Roosevelt died, running into the station on the subway. People cry-ing. Roosevelt was a father figure by then. L: It's interesting, listening to you because the war caught you up so completely. J: Oh, yeah. L: You went from a part time newspaper job int~ the midst of city wide effort. It was such a huge change to0k place for you. J: Well, the--of course, h~~? L: Is that a correct reading of what happened? J: Uh, no, I think it was more gradual thanthat. Because I ,.,.., |
