This folder contains interviews conducted on different occasions by Leslie Kelen and Sandra Fuller. Rose (b. 1911) discusses his family background and childhood in Poland, including anti-Semitic feelings there. He continues his story with the economic situation, Krystalnacht, Jewish ghettos, World War II, his experience in concentration camps (particularly in Auschwitz), living conditions and religious life, liberation by American soldiers, and life in post-war Germany. Other topics covered include traveling to the United States, the Salt Lake Jewish community, orthodox Judaism, and the merger of the Salt Lake congregations. 137 pages. |

And they try to incorporate it here. Whether it ' s to the liking of the congregation or not, well, [they say] "Well, if it works out over there, why shouldn't we try it here?" SF So it's an aggressive community then? IR Well, et ' s put it as 'living.' It ' s very much alive. And if you're alive, you can expect problems , changes. SF Do you like that? IR WEll, yes and no. Certain things I do • certain things I don ' t . ..) Basically, I say , that trying to go with the stream and trying tomake too many changes-- pretty soon you ' regoing to lose every-thing. I read about 20 years ago a book , I ' ve forgotten the title. The author's name was Browne . He wrote severl books about the Jewish life and the Jewish custom . And on ebook I shall recommend is titled Stranger than Fiction . I~ deals with the Holocaust. It must have been written in the early ' SOs because I read it about 20-25 years ago . He said about the Reformed people , the Reform movement, is that they had a very strong tendency to go back to the tradition. They figured they went too far out and if they they were going to keep on this way , there will be nothing left. Let me give you an example . There is a seminar (or a rabbinical school, you could it _), in Cincinnati , which is run by the Reform movement. I understand several years ago , a group of students ~u~~;f\ ~ for the _!'~ b • ""-:~ ~- under the Reform rabbis, insistedon having kosher food every day. They installed |
