This folder contains interviews conducted on different occasions by Leslie Kelen and Sandra Fuller. Rose (b. 1911) discusses his family background and childhood in Poland, including anti-Semitic feelings there. He continues his story with the economic situation, Krystalnacht, Jewish ghettos, World War II, his experience in concentration camps (particularly in Auschwitz), living conditions and religious life, liberation by American soldiers, and life in post-war Germany. Other topics covered include traveling to the United States, the Salt Lake Jewish community, orthodox Judaism, and the merger of the Salt Lake congregations. 137 pages. |

IR Well, if he wasin France ~MfNVienna, he was on his own. But we had a very traditional house, very traditional. SF Warm? IR Oh, yes. Very good relations w,: !"": /,.J.,.;..f.r.Nir, very good relations . With my mother especially. SF Why was that? Do you think that was traditional too? IR WEll , I don 'tknow , mainly this is the way mothers who bear the children are, closer to them. Father does his job . He has to do a job . Raises them , what you call (his children), keeps them in line , or whatever is best to do. But mothers sometimes overlook certain things that a father will not. SF In your family, that was the way it was? IR Yeah. SF There's a word that K~~is coming up when I've been doing some reading. And that word is "Cap:J" It seems to be someone in the _concentration camp. IR This is an Italian word and it means "head." SF Did you have them? IR Oh , sure . Every group going out to work had a capo . You could call it the foreman or steward, a boss. SF Did you know who that was always? |
