Show OHI Isaac Rose 23 July 82 sl:8 a rabbi died, there was always talk about a merger. Years ago, I understand, in the 30s and the 40s. It wasn't a brand new idea in the 70s. It was just a continuation of old ideas. And it materialized here, I would say, thanks to one person, mainly, who was Rabbi Bergman, who was the rabbi of the Reform Congregation, Congregation B'nai Israel. He was a very wise man and a very intelligent person. He could project himself. People liked him. And even though we had a rabbi at Montefiore, Rabbi Goldstein, after the merger, we decided one had to go. And we decided to keep Rabbi Bergman. We figured him being from a traditional background, he would be able to serve the needs of everybody. And actually , he did a marvelous job . And he was here after the merger abother six or seven years . Maybe more. At least 7 years. SF When you got here, had the Sunday Schools already merged? IR No. The sunday school had been separate and thefirst of in the merger was a religious school. It was called the United Jewish Religious School. And I guess this happened in the middle 60s. A few years before the merger. I was on theboard of the United Jewish REligious School. SF That must have been difficult to choose the teachers and ... IR The question was only the curriculum , etc. But, you see, when you deal with young people 14-15-16 years old in this kind of eNvironment, you just ... you don't try to put across a point that a kid has to stick with, you give them general ideas and they make up their own mind later. |
