Show College of Fine Arts Seeking distinction, the College of Fine Arts trains people with talent and ideas for professional careers or increased personal enjoyment. The college, under the direction of Lowell M. Durham, includes departments in architecture, art, music, sculpture, and speech. It was established as a college in 1947 and is now famed for the art it produces and the recognized artists on the faculty. The Department of Architecture has been accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board and the Music Department is a member of the National Association of Schools of Music. Fine Art majors are known for producing results. Local painters exhibited in the Union Building and Art Barn; the Humanities Seminar debated modern versus representative art. "U" students compose the University of Utah Symphony and complete the ranks of the Utah Symphony; the Combined Choruses repeated Robertson's "Oratorio." Ballet Theater presented a May recital with imported artists. Playbox, Curiosity, and University Theaters entlisted Speech majors.
