Show A conference to iron out student problems . . . a time for student leaders to get better acquainted . . . for busy ASUU officers and interested novices to relax from the pressure of government and glean pep-up ideas for policies . . . this was 1954 Leadership Conference. Presided over by ASUU President Jack Carlson and under the chairmanship of Cherry Bushman and Cwean hostesses, four questions were argued by panels and delegates: competition of Greeks and Independents under the same rules . . . equal release of campus news to the Chronicle and Salt Lake papers . . . revision of U Days events . . . limiting students in yearly ASUU activities. Only the last topic brought energetic division in vote-28 to 15 against throwing out the awards system. Recommendations on the other three left the policies at status quo. However, all was not work at this overnight conference. Delegates hiked along Alta's moonlit trails . . . played shuffleboard, ping pong and bridge in front of the fire . . . gulped orange juice between panels for new zest and energy . . . sneaked unscheduled trips to the kitchen . . . spent half the night in pillow fights, gab fests, and picture taking. With new ideas and better understanding of other organizations, student leaders anticipated next year's conference as an even greater chance to learn leadership methods and as a part of the expanding life at the "U". Monte Christensen listens intently to Ceanne Mitchell explain the intricacies of the award system under discussion during mid-morning orange juice break. Leadership committee members, contemplating conference weekend ahead, are front, Marlene Wessel, Marilyn Mattson, Chairman Cherry Bushman, Joan Christiansen, Ruth Cannon; back, Barbara Bratt, Ceanne Mitchell, Elaine Ranker, Nancy Butchereit, Rosa Suess, Nola Goff, and Nola Grant. 73 |
