Show PUBLICATIONS A day on the Chrony staff has many sides. At one o'clock editors, daily staff, and reporters climb to the Union Building fourth floor to produce another issue. Sometimes news is tacked on the door waiting for them; phone calls and people streaming in and out bring more stories; and staff members track down the rest. Working with the Public Relations Office, they pick up faculty news. From committee members they find news on campus events. Through the Exec Council offices they publish releases on student government. Special reporting is done, such as the college write-ups for U-Days; and feature page reporters write editorials arid search other campus papers for "hot" items. As news is being compiled, the page dummy on the editor's desk gradually fills up. There are days when news is packed into the meager outline; others when the dummy is discouragingly spacious. But finally the staff troops down to Paragon Printing and spends the evening reading proofs, laughing at the Bibler joke for the day, and grabbing a snack while the presses roar. Each morning, students snatch the early-distributed Chronicle from building newsstands. They catch up on coming events and meetings for the day, enjoy the day's editorial or fight in the opinion column, discover last night's game score or a new campus queen, and praise the "Chrony" for entertaining them through their 8 o'clock class. Editor Gail Feltch and Daily Editor Bee Staheli start the Chronicle day typing copy in the office. Gail Feltch demonstrates the linotype machine that sets type at Paragon Printing Company. Reading and re-reading of proofs is done by Bee Staheli, Gail Feltch, Joe Ruben, Marilyn Mattsson. 26 |
