One such man was James (Jens) Hansen : fiddler, singer, director, architect. James was horn 24 April 1828 in Gronnegade, Fredriksborg, Denmark. His musical talents became apparent when he was very young and his job was to herd geese. The long days spent following the lazy birds gave him time to develop bis talents. He had a melodic voice and loved to sing; often he made op his own music and lyrics. He longed for a violin, but the family income was not sufficient for Mw to indulge in such luxury, so he made his own. It was a beautiful instrument, and he used it for many years. James married Sophia Larsen on 10 AogU3t 1851. A year and a half later he and his wife joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? and made plans to go to Aoerioa to join the Saints. Their first child, Hans, was born is 1852.4 Sophia's health waa broken by this event, but ahe was determined to -59-
