| Show Hall about 12 or 15 feet above the level of the dance floor It wasnusedlot most spectators sat around the edges of the dance floor Between January and June several special dances were held commencing with the one on December 31 which spilled over into the ne year The orchestra didnplay Home Sweet Home until one or two clock And even at such late hours we listened to its skeet notes with regret and pulled our partners closer as the lights were dimmedlittle for the goodnight dance Valentine Day was special The lovely mirrors often were decorated with heart-shaped valentines and for many young couples the spirit of Cupid flew around the Hall shooting air on that little arrows in the night For the romantic Junior Prom usually held in March the beauty of the Hall was emhanced by the decoration committee of the high school junior class network of tiny wires was strung criss-crossfew feet above the tallest dancer so they couldnreach them and colored crepe paper--pink blue green yellow sometimes purple and gold the high school colors was twisted or looped work ceiling over the of the Hall It was for they were filled interspersed with white- around the wires to makeperfect latticeentire floor but far below the high ceilingcozy heavenly fairyland to our young eyes with stars Many girls had new formals --they were also called dresses sometines--but some had to be satisfied with old ones remodelled new bodices sashes bows ribbons and lace to make them look new Some of the boys could afford NEW SUITS Seated around the Hall were proud par nts who came to watch their handsome sons and beautiful daughters dance and to watch the junior class execute to the nusic of the Triwnphal March from Alda--two abreast four abreat split and go two ways--the maneuvers of the promenade Sometimes the college and high school sponsored joint dances And didnsome of the high school girls who danced with college boys think they were big little uppity some of us thought And some of the high school boys made so bold as to dance with college girls Yes sir thatmy baby no sir donmean maybe yes sir shemy baby now The annual high school GirlDay dance came in April It wastime of suspense for many boys who wondered whether they would be asked by their favorite girl friends or whether they might not even be asked And if some boys were habitusl switchers some jealousydates or spite-dates might be made or not made It could work both ways For girls it was sometimes tramatic How for example wouldvery popular girl choose from among several boys she had dated and how wouldgirl not all that popular decide what to do Not everything came up roses in those rosy days Have broken hearts had 13 |
