Show Eureka Historic District - Eureka Miners' Union Hall November 29, 1984 The Eureka Miners' Union Hall was constructed in 1906 for the Eureka Miners' Union, 151, Western Federation of Miners by Henry T. Cornwall, contractor. The main floor was rented to commercial establishments, the first being J. C. Penney's Golden Rule Store in 1909. This was one of Penney's earliest stores, reportedly the eleventh in \.,hat eventually became a major national chain. Earl C. Sams, the manager of that store, later became national president of J. C. Penney Company. The second floor was used as a union meeting place and also rented to various fraternal groups as a meeting hall. The miners' union was organized in 1890 but disbanded in 1893 following a strike. It was reorganized February 8, 1902. The building still functions as it did when built, currently housing United Steelworkers Local 4260 and various fraternal groups continue to meet here. Harkers Pl aced January 1985 |
