Box 218 Eureka, Utah 84628 Re: Signing for Tintic Historical Mining District on Interstate 15 Dear Governing Board: I recel. ved a request from Mrs. Coleen McNulty of the Board to provide a copy of our policy regarding signing for historical districts. Attached is a copy of the policy regarding signing on the interstate system. You will notice that on Page 3 of the policy, the priority list includes Historic Sites, which are not the same as Historic Districts. A historic site is a physical object or specific location that a traveler can actually go and see, either from a distance or right at the site. Designated historical homes are examples of historic sites. A historic district is defined as a geographic area, where there mayor may not be physical objects or specifio locations to see. . Thus, because the Tintic Historical Mining District is a gjstrict, it does not qualify for signing on the interstate system according to policy_ I need to clarify what was stated in our previous letter to the Board. I stated that UDOT was changing its signing policy for historical districts. Actually, it was not a change in policy but rather a focus on removing signs that did not fall under any of the categories listed. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. If the governing board wishes to change the Tintic m~nlng area from a district to a ~, and are successful in doing so through the proper channels, we could consider installing signs again on the freeway. In the mean time, signing for the mining district is still possible for state routes other than the freeway, at the request of the board. I also maintain my recommendation that the board consider appropriate signing for non-state highways as well. Sincerely, D~~~tt, P.E. Region Three Traffic Engineer |
