Others call them Sanicula angu/isfola, but'generally they are called Primula veris minor. T haue (as you fee) placed them withthe Cowllips, putting a differen ce be- tweene Primrofes and Cowdlips. And fome hauediftingnifhed them » by calling the Cowllips, Primula veris Elatior, that is,the Taller Primrofe, and the other Humilis, Lowe or Dwarfe Primrofes. In Englith they hauein like matinerdiners names, according to feuerall Countries, as Primrofes, Cowflips, Oxelips, Palfieworts,and Petty Mulleins. The firtt kindes, whichare lowerthenthereft, are generally called by the name of Primrofes (as I thinke) throughout England. Theother are diuerfly named ; for infome Countries they call them Paigles, or Palfieworts, or Petty Mulleins, which are called Cowflipsin others. Thofe are vfually called Oxelips, whofe flowers are naked , or bare withouthuskes to containethem , being not fo {wecte as the Cowllip, yet haue they fomelittle {ent , although the Latine name doth makethemte hauenone. The Franticke, Fantafticke,orFoolifh Cow/flip , in fomeplacesis called by Country people, Iackean Apeson horfe-backe, which is an v{uall name with them, giuen to many other plants, as Daifies, Marigolds, &c. ifthey be ftrangeor fantafticall , differing inthe formefrom the ordinary kinde ofthe fingle ones. The fmalleft are vfually called through allthe North Country, Birds eyen, becaufe of the {mall yellow circle inthe bottomes of the flowers, refembling the eye ofa bird, The Vertues. Primrofes and Cow‘lips are in a manner wholly vfed in Cephalicall difcafes, either among otherherbes or flowers, or of themfelues alone,to cafe painesin the head, and is accounted next vnto Betony, the beft for that purpofe. Experience likewife hath fhewed , that they are profitable both for the Palfie, and paines of theioynts, euenas the Beares cares are, which hathcaufedthe names of Arthritica, Paralyfis,and Paralytica, to bee giuen them, Theiuice ofthe flowersis commended to cleanfe the {pots or marks of the face, whereof fome Gentlewomen haue found good experience.
