The clock dissects the silence neatly, and the diving board reverberates,tossing air into air. "Does that make sense?" she asks finally. Marty turns towards her sister, avoiding her eyes. With her free hand, she shields her eyes from the sunlight. It was only a week ago that she stood at that window, watching her mother. If she had done something then, would it have helped, made this not happen? If she had been there that night, and had been able to talk to Jake, or even go get a doctor right away, would anything have been different? "I don't know," she says. "It's the truth," Rachael insists. "It is, Marty," she says, and comes and stands over her, touching her shoulder with one hand. "You can't possibly do anything about things that have already happened." "She's right," Megan says. She pulls her legs up under her and leans towards Marty. "You know that as well as I do. We can feel guilty, and blame ourselves, and think about all the what-ifs we want. But nothing is going to changed what's already happened. So why worry about it?
