Show Woodworth/227 the time they went to New York. When they stop, the sky is pink, just as it is now, and the birds are tuning up for their full-fledged song, as if waiting for the conductor. Kevin hops up and opens the door for her, and she steps out carefully, taking his arm. He leads her to the elevator, past the doorman, and they stand side by side, watching the needle point higher and higher until it reaches the letter P at the end of the scale. They step out of the elevator together, and the door to the penthouse drifts open without him letting go of her to fumble with keys. "Let's pretend we're married," he whispers to her, and they fall together into the couch. "Let's pretend we're man and wife," he whispers, and she can feel his breath covering her body like dew. She wakes then as her glass tips far enough to spill liquid on the front of Megan's jacket. "Clumsy," she thinks spilling it again as she tries to brush the droplets from the jacket. She stands up and smiles around the room at the furniture. "Don't ever tell them, ok?" she asks. The furniture sits glumly. '"If you ever tell them that I'm clumsy, I'll sell you all to the Salvation Army, you understand?" she whispers threateningly. "There, it'll be our secret," she says confidently, and fills the glass again to solidify the promise. Where was the bottle level when she started? She should remember just in case Ned is watching the levels again, damn him. She tries to imagine. What this the bottle that was full to above the label? Couldn't have been. She opened one. When? When they were at the train station, picking up Megan. That explains it. because Ned had been drinking out of this |
