Show Woodworth/85 get to the apartment on Myrtle Street, and Rachael is complaining about going up and down stairs. Marty is thinking of telling Mike that she has had it for the day. She needs to sit down some place. She hasn't told Rachael about meeting Gary yet. But Mike is still going strong. "Now this one just opened up. I haven't seen it yet, myself. But one of the guys at the office showed it to a couple of people yesterday, and said that it was really nice. In fact, one of them said that he wanted it. But he didn't put a deposit on it." The stairway is thin and dark. Marty watches Mike's tight rear wiggle and sway in her face, and hears Rachael pounding up the stairs behind her. "They may have called back by now, but until we actually have a deposit, we can keep showing the apartment," he says over his shoulder as he puts the key in the lock. The door opens into a hallway that runs perpendicular to the entrance. Mike feels around by the side of the door, flicks a switch. Nothing happens. "Christ, I hope the electricity's not off," he mutters, and pats the walls. "Well, this would be the living room," he says, and Marty and Rachael follow him into a room off the hallway. Across fromthe door, two windows face directly onto the street. Rachael leans against one, looking out. The light comes through her blouse, silhouetting her figure. Marty looks out a side window, directly into the apartment across the alley. "It's less that three feet away," she tells Mike. "That's city living," he tells her. "Look, there's your fireplace." The fireplace is a small brick hole in the wall. No mantle. Marty tries to picture herself reading in front of that fireplace, snow falling in the streets behind her. "go ygvi .cup.psiej^ it works?" she asks. |
