Show Woodworth/138 Mary Gallagher promises that, if Ruth will permit, she will put some nail polish on Marty's nails soon, so Marty can see how it would feel to be grown up. Jake comes and stands outside the door, and says, "Mary Gallagher? Mary Gallagher?" And Mary says, "Yes?" very softly, so that it is almost a purr against Marty's ear. "You can come in, Jake." Jake opens the door, and leans around the door jamb. Marty opens one eye, and sees Jake staring at her. He swings into the room, holding on to the door jamb with one hand and looking at the floor. "Mommie says that you are to come down to the kitchen right now. She said to say that it's about dinner." "Ok," Mary Gallagher says. Her voice is still a purr deep in her chest. "You've got to get down, honey," she sags. "I have to see about dinner." Marty stretches and slides off Mary Gallagher's lap. "Ooooo Kkkk," she says as she slides. Mary Gallagher stands and switches off her radio. "Will you ask her now?" Marty a. murmurs, grabbing Mary Gallagher's hand. "Ask her what, honey?" Mary Gallagher asks, looking down and squeezing Marty's hand. "You knooowww," Marty looks up, and then down again at Mary Gallagher's red chapped hands. "About then," and her voice drops to a whisper, "nailpolish." "I will," Mary Gallagher promises. "Just as soon as I get the chance." Mary Gallagher picks up the bib apron that hangs on the back of the rocking chair, and leaves the room while tying it behind her back. The sun is lazing about on the floor, and Marty wants to get back into the rocking chair, and to watch as the light is sucked back out the window.
