"Let's leave the lights off," he says. Yes. Now it's ok. She knew it. Candles. Wine. He brushes past her into the living room, darkness against darkness. He sits down on the couch, and she can see him faintly in the light from the apartment across the alley. "Do you want some wine?" she asks gently, moving through the darkness. "No. No thank you." So polite. Yes, there are practicalities, Karen. Divorce. But it's happened now. He came here. He loves her. "Come sit down," he says, lifting his arm. She sits close beside him, resumes rubbing. His arm tightens around her passionately, but he doesn't move towards her. She nestles her arm against his chin. Dizzy. Disoriented. Must do this, for him. Owes this to him. Sways a little against him, and he • catches her mid-sway with his other arm. The suddenness frightens her, and she breaks away, stands up. But, yes. It's just that he's feeling it too. He knows the changes. Embarrassed that she jumped up, she asks him, "Are you sure you don't want something to eat?" She starts towards the kitchen and he follows her. "I know I have some cheese. And I think I've got some crackers." She senses him behind her in the kitchen. She reaches into a cabinet and takes down a plate. "It was really nice of my mother to give me all this china.
