Show je. the narrow part at the bottom of the sack came such a yowl that every miner in the place except Bill's bunch jumped back. Bill carefully pulled out a bare foot that looked awfully human. The men leaned closer to the table now as Bill quickly put both hands into the sack again and pulled the baby out in one long swoop and sat him up. The men looked at him with disbelief. "Thought all of you had been foolin' us and ya had a calf in there," Swede Johnson said. "Calf? Maybe a bull calf but my ears were hearing some-thin' more like a bobcat I thought Bill had been tamin." Jake said. The baby turned his head and looked around at Jake, as though seriously sizing him up. Then he slowly looked at each of the other men as they stood there smiling, half-embarassed as though they had no- idea how to react to a baby with it's hair ruffled and damp and one bare pink foot. Finally he saw Bill, and his mouth pulled into a wide sly smile, and he put his head down to one side, and, when the men broke into laughter, he smiled broader and his eyes lit up as though enjoying the joke. "What's his name?" Jake asked. Bill shook his head. "Didn't even know his father's name." "Anyone know his pa»s name?" Jake asked, looking around. "Now any kid's got to have a name.
