Tiny, s i t t i n g close to him, said, "You're underx*ear»s showing." Bill glanced quickly down. "Looks s l i g h t l y wet»" Tiny said. Lunch Mouth roared with laughter as B i l l ' s puzzled eyes saw one leg of his long underwear he'd tied on the baby t r a i l ing off the bed. There was more laughing as the rest of the men came over. Bill raised his chin in the air^ "laugh men, ilaugh. This old cook's just v i s i t i n g here with you. My r e a l home's in heaven. A s a i n t ' s what I am, loaning my only pair of warm drawers to a poor orphan babe!" He put his arms up over his head. His s h i r t sleeves were rolled above the muscles of his arms, and he spread his long hands to make a halo. Then dropping them quickly to his sides,he straightened and shouted, "Hallalluahl" and broke into a rough stomping rhythm. The wooden floor of the shack shook and you could see the young man he used to be as his slender taut body snapped with the rhythm of his song, shouted above the laughing of the miners. He stopped and turned, hearing a noise strange to his ears. The baby's arms were waving and i t was laughing aloud. It stopped and he did a couple more fast turns, and i t burst out |
