Show identification, etc., by laying the figure -or parts of the figure- of one person, with the bacterial portrait of another. This experiment identified two things: 1. That these were, in fact, portraits. 2. That whatever was on the face or body was some organic matter. These two things threw my original aim off track, and tossed it into the realm of body politics, and discussions regarding standards of beauty through the juxtaposition of something repellant, like bacteria overlaying a beautiful body. This, however, only works if you think the body I painted was a beautiful one, and if you think that bacteria is repellant. What my work was discussing, and what I was attempting to discuss through my work, had gotten their wires crossed, and I needed to simplify. I needed to let go of identity through the body, and become comfortable with the ambiguity that I wanted my work to portray. I needed to be comfortable 46 |
