Show 1008 through Cataract canyon with one exception, that is just below the mouth of Dark canyon. [ R. 2381] " Anyway, I finally got the raft within about six feet of the bank, and Mr. Russell gave a mighty jump and landed all right, but in doing that he kicked that raft, started it back out in the river again. " I had to pile off and get to shore the best I could. " We got up to the Spanish Bottoms that night about dark. We had no bed, and all the food we had was a sack of biscuits; it didn't rain, it poured all night. " The next morning we started to climb out. I didn't know it at the time, but Mr. Russell was becoming mentally deranged. It was quite a problem to get out of there. When we started to climb out - there was a place near the top there were trails kind of forked - I told Mr. Russell, ' You we don't want to lose sight of each other.'" R. 2382. There is a trail leading from the west or right hand side, into Cataract Canyon at Spanish Bottom three miles below the junction of the rivers [ Green and Colorado]. The sheepmen call this trail " under the ledge". R. 2383. " Cataract canyon comes up so high, there is a mesa, then another big ledge; that is what in the summer." R. 2383. After separating from Mr. Russell, he followed his fork of the trail until it ended, then returned and began to hunt for Mr. Russell, whom he found sitting on a rock. They then climbed out of the canyon and walked down to Hite, where they arrived at about eleven o'clock on the night of the second day. |
