Show 948 From a point about ten miles down the Colorado below the mouth of the San Juan where he left the party, he took one of the same boats with Mr. Loper as boatman, to Lees Ferry, accompanied also by Heber Christensen. " Q Going down from that point to Lees Ferry did you encounter any difficulties in the operation of the boats? " A Our difficulties from there on seemed mild in comparison with the San Juan." R. 2244- 2245. Between the point where he left the party at Lees Ferry, he would judge that sand bars were encountered, and four or five times they ran aground, but in no case did they have to get out and push the boats. No rapids were encountered in the lower stretch of the river after he left the party. The boats used were made by Fellows at San Pedro, California, for the Southern California Edison Company, and shipped to Greenriver, Utah, from which point they were taken by truck to the river below Bluff. R. 2246. Cross Examination. ( R. Vol. 12, pp. 2246- 2253) Of the 142 pictures taken by him, 121 were taken on the San Juan River, and from " No. 122 on should be on the Colorado", except two, one of which is a picture that was taken of the Little Colorado bridge. There should be 141 of the pictures if the group is complete, one of the negatives having been lost by the Kodak Company, which would have brought the total up to 142. When he was with the survey party, eleven days of the time between July 18th and October 14th were spent on the Colorado River. None of the pictures included in the exhibits are photographs of the San Juan River during the low water stage. |
