The University Summer School was opened first in 1893 a: a 'sort of private faculty affair, with few students and smell fees. Several members of the University faculty, seeing a need for summer . school work, joined together, gave the instruction, and divided the small income. As the need for such instruction_was demonstrated, the University formally took it over in 1894 and became responsible for its operation. The Summer School continued to grow in size and in- portsnce until a term of six seeks was found insufficient to meet the needs of the State. So in 1919 it has extended to 12 weeks and node an integral quarter of the academic year. This arrangement makes the University plant available during the entire year at a very small additional cost, as the overhead expenses hare to go on all summer in any case. For the students who must com- plete college at e mininum of time and expense, it makes available a fourvquarter system of three years instead of the customary four years of three quarters each. Of the 1039 students registered in the University Summer School in 1925, 294 were students taking advantage of the tour-qdarter plan. For the University now to return to the old idea of a six weeks |
