Show 6954 Chaffin- D 4942 just been describing, have you been back, was that you last trip? A That was my last trip to the Colorado river. Q During that period of nineteen or twenty years approximately you were away from the river, did you notice any changes in the position of the channel of the river at the points that you saw it in 1925 or 1926? A Very little change in the river, in the bed of the river or in the river; it changed but very little in that time; looked about the same; everything seemed natural to me. Q In your experience on the Colorado river, Mr. Chaffin, do you ever know of any occasion when sandbars from flood or from any cause would come suddenly and extend out into the river, diverting it in one direction or another? A Sometimes when there is a big flood down some of the side canyons, they will carry in sediment that will maybe push the river towards the opposite bank for a short period of time, but they will always leave a channel; from my experience always be a channel to go on up or down the river. Q Do those deposits of sand and silt that come down from those floods at side canyons, at the mouth of side canyons, remain in position for any considerable length of time? |
