Show 6932 Chaffin- D 4920 heating instead of electricity as we have today; through something like a blow torch; It had a hot tube; when that got hot enough it gave it its combustion; I believe it was supposed to develop about six horsepower, but I don't think it developed over two or three. Q Did it always develop two or three? A At times the engine would pull pretty good, work along good; at other times, you might be going up stream or down stream with it in the boat and it would stop if it got a little too warm; didn't seem to get the right mixture, it would stop; if there was much wind blowing these tubes wouldn't heat properly, and maybe stop. Q Tat is, the engine quit on you at times? A Yes sir, quit on us a good many times. Q Going up or down stream? A Both ways; going up and down stream, sometimes standing still, the boat standing still. Q It was rather an erratic engine? A Yes sir; wore many a blister on my hand cranking it. THE SPECIAL MASTER: I guess none of us would want to run a 1902 automobile. BY MR. FARNSWORTH: |
