I'm not clearing it." I'm like, "Well somebody's got to clear it.' He refused to so I took me and Corporal Wright and two of the other NCOs from 1st squad and we went over and cleared it. By that time it was dark, it was really dark. I'd moved up and talked to the CO, found out what their situation was, helped with a couple of guys that had gotten hurt. Oh, yeah, during the middle of that the weapons company cat vehicles had come back up to support us. Well, they didn't go all the way up to support us; they went close. Our guys grabbed all their ammo, because they couldn't go any further in their Humvees, and frickin ripped all their ammo and water off. We about had to shoot them to get it. We said, "Hey, if you're not going to fight, then give us all your ammo and water, we'll fight." Then they took off. I'm trying to think what else happened to us. Then I think I moved over and stayed the rest of the night up on the building with Edwards' squad. So we were taking fire until after dark, but not much after dark. But we had absolutely no tank support, we couldn't move across Highway 5 and the enemy was dug in across Highway 5. So we had called for tank support. About 4:30 in the morning, right at dawn, you could hear tanks tinking down the road: tink, tink, tink, tink, tink, tink, tink, tink, tink, tink. That was just a relief to everybody. The next morning tanks rolled up, shot a breech through one compound. The enemy had bugged out of the other compound, the one that we were taking the most fire from.
