So they set a demo charge up and it was it looked like frickin K y t n Kops to me, because the four of them are standing there around the corn r and th y all g out, they run out, set this demo charge and then they run back but Lavulavu ran the wrong way. So he's lost, so they run back over, grab Lavulavu and then they 're like worried about the demo charge, so it just looked like a total. . .I don't know. I was talking to the CO at the same time with Sergeant Sugiyama standing on my right, Corporal Toone on my left, facing Corporal Vadonya and the CO while this was transpiring. This is when all hell broke loose and Vadonya took a shot to the head, because the enemy had gone back around and flanked us on the left. Vadonya was shot to the head, dropped straight to the ground. The CO dashed across the road, Toone dropped down behind the telephone pole, I dropped down behind Vadonya, not sure where Sergeant Sugiyama went, but we all turned and started returning flanking fire where Sergeant Hardy's boys from the machine gun squad were supposed to be firing and they didn't have that sector covered. So we returned fire that direction and I reached up and couldn't feel a pulse on Vadonya's leg. Yelled across the street, "Sir, Vadonya's dead." Called for a corpsman immediately. Corpsman came rushing over. They said he was dead, but we started taking heavy fire from the front and the flank. We were getting enveloped and we needed to get out of there, we needed to punch forward and get out of there. And what we ended up doing-and I might have the chain of events a little bassakwards here-we punched Edwards squad forward and Spencer's squad, pulled them off of that building and moved them over one street towards the enemy. Then had Wright's squad continue to fire heavy fire and suppress the enemy while Edwards moved up and 86 |
