Show Robert E. Irion eptember 20'h, 2002 He got a direct hit on the wing there. Went into an immediate spin and went down and two guys got out. The tail gunner and one of the other gunners were the only two that got out of the plane. Well, I didn't know anything about this until December. I'm down in London in December- oh, I missed something. In December, I run into a guy named Bill O'Brien I told you about the volunteers in Florida? I forgot to tell you something when we were going through that part of the story. Bill O'Brien had volunteered in Florida and went across the ocean on a boat for about ten days and they ended up in Stone, England the day before I got there and I'm flown in- but I'd spent ten days home on leave while he'd been traveling across the ocean! Bill O'Brien was the first guy I saw when I got to the replacement depot. BEN: Really? ROB: And I said, "Hey, Bill! What are you doing here?'' "I just got here yesterday." I said, "You just got here yesterday?" He said, "Yeah we've been on a ship." And he'd been one of the two guys that volunteered in Florida. Well, okay. Bill O'Brien then, later on, I ran into him in London, and he said: "Did you hear about Ed Hesse?" And I said, "No. What about Ed Hesse?" "You know he went to bombers?" "Yeah. And I haven't heard from him since." 67 |
