Show Robert E. Irion eptember 20th 2002 He said, "I didn't want to fly that old bag of bolts. I knew it was going to happen!" Well anyhow, they finally gave me a new airplane. BEN: What was the designation? Do you know how they broke down? ROB: Okay. That was our squadron number, "6N." BEN: This then represented the 505th? ROB: -Yeah. And then the second "N" was my individual letter there. "6N" was the 505th Squadron. BEN: Okay. ROB: I got a brand new airplane. Well, my wife's maiden name was Beverly Ware so I decided I was going to name my new airplane B. Blair. Now, you can see the crew, they got smiles on their face there. But when I told them what I wanted to name it, it wasn't that way. I went out to the line and I said, "Okay guys, we're going to change the name. We're not going to have ' Silver Streak II,' it's going to be the B. Ware." Boy, right away they're kicking the rocks. They're all looking down, all three of them. They're all standing there. And I said, "What's the matter with that?" And they said, "Sounds kind of ominous, don't you think, sir?" And I said, "Oh, hell." It' s a good name. I said, "My girlfriend's name was Beverly and her last name was Ware and I want to name it after her." They said, "I don't know. I don't think that's a good idea." 64 |
