Parker (b. 1926) was inducted into the army right after graduation from high school in 1944. He reported to Fort Douglas, Utah, and then was transferred to Camp Walters and Camp Swift in Texas. He recalls his experiences in the 10th Mountain Division. 44 pages. |

Show W. DUANE PARKER F brua 14 2 2 WIN: Well, that's a directed unit, and that's notable. Thanks for telling us about that. I there anything el ou have to say? DUA: Oh, gee. I don't know. ROS: I think it might be interesting if you told him when you were cut off out there. DUA: I did. ROS: I know, but how you got rescued. DUA: When I said we were cut off for three days out there, they tried to rescue us several times and failed. There was one man who was determined to help us; and, bless his heart, you don't usually have the colonel do that for you. But he cussed a few words, I guess, and he said, "By damn, we're going to go out there and get those guys!" And he led a platoon and came out and got us. And that's when we got relieved. WIN: That was you and Archibald? DUA: No, that was the whole platoon. WIN: The whole platoon was out there? DUA: Yes, for about three days. ROS: Did you tell him who that man was? DUA: Colonel Hampton. WIN: Yes, that's another interesting aspect of this story. They rescued you from that area. That's when you almost ran out of ammunition? DUA: Yes. WIN: And didn't have any food for a couple of days? DUA: Yes. We were out of rations, and ammo was down to the last. You know, it's funny, those other battles. After the 3rd of March it was just a series of one battle after another during that period time. Gosh, I remember one time we had so many killed and wounded we were a skeleton crew, I' 11 tell you. I often said, "Man, if they knew how bad of shape we were in they'd have kept coming." But maybe they were in he same shape. I don' know. But 42 |
