Show W. DUANE PARKER DUA: Yes, I was home. WIN: So you had time to get here and back? DUA: Yes. WIN: Okay. F bruary 14 2 2 DUA: And then, on the bus going to Camp Swift, I sat by a lady and got into a conversation with her, and she was going down to Camp Swift. Her husband was in the 1Oth Mountain Division, and she said they were going overseas. And, so, before I even got there I knew I was on my way. WIN: So by the time you got to Camp Swift they didn't have any time to train you? DUA: No. WIN: 1 ust packed up the gear and took off? DUA: I messed all that great ski training. Well, maybe everybody wouldn't say it was great because it was tough, rugged training they did in Colorado over in Camp Hale. WIN: Yeah. DUA: But, anyway, that is what I was looking for, and I didn't get that. So I don 't know what the three letters of recommendation did for me. They got me in, but that was it. WIN: You didn't get to Colorado to carry around packs on skis for weeks, huh? DUA: No. WIN: So you got to Camp Swift. The lOth Mountain Division was packing out and heading towards Europe. DUA: Yes. I arrived there November 11 , 1944, and we shipped out on Thanksgiving Day from Camp Swift. WIN: Really? DUA: We went to Newport News, Norfolk, West Virginia; port of debarkation for Italy. WIN: So about two weeks there, huh? DUA: Yes. WIN: So you weren't really trained in the art of mountaineering, or ski mountaineering? 12 |
