Show W. DUANE PARKER rua 14 20 2 troop trains of the lOth Mountain. And I got to talk to some of them occasionally on those sidings, and the wer going to Texas then, down to Camp Swift. WIN: Okay. Is this when you were just going down there? DUA: Yes. WIN: To begin basic training? DUA: Yeah, on the way from Fort Douglas to Camp Wolters. WIN: Okay. So you had an option that you could apply to be in the lOth Mountain while at Camp Wolters for basic? DUA: See, I don't know if you're familiar with the idea, but when the lOth Mountain Division was started- everybody who went to the lOth Mountain Division had to have a recommendation to go. You couldn't just go. You had to have three letters of recommendation to join. I guess they were looking for quality, or something I don 't know for sure what they were looking for. WIN: What source of recommendation did you need? Anybody, or just ... ? DUA: People that knew you, or people that could vouch for your character and that you were a good, reliable person. WIN: Like your neighbor, or bishop, or whatever? DUA: Things like that. So I sent home to my mother and asked her if she could get three letters of recommendation. And I got them, and turned them in, and got accepted. And I was to report to Camp Swift on the 11th ofNovember 1944. I fmished basic training the latter part of October, then went home on furlough . WIN: So you had a two week furlough? DUA: Well, probably ten days I think it was. WIN: Ten days. So you went over to Camp Swift? DUA: Yes. WIN: On furlough. Did you come home? 11 |
